Flag-Waving

Also Known As: Patriotic Appeal Nationalism Appeal Rally Around the Flag
Manipulation & Propaganda ID: flag_waving

Definition

Flag-waving is a propaganda technique that appeals to patriotism, national identity, or group loyalty to justify a position or shut down criticism. By wrapping a claim in the symbolism of national pride — flags, anthems, military imagery, or founding myths — the speaker makes opposing the claim feel like opposing the nation or group itself. The logical connection between patriotism and the specific conclusion is typically absent or deeply flawed.

Examples

A senator argues: 'Real Americans support this defense bill. Our troops are out there fighting for our freedom, and anyone who votes against this funding is spitting on the graves of the brave men and women who gave their lives for this country.'

An advertisement for a truck brand shows sweeping footage of mountains and farmland with a voiceover saying: 'Built by American hands, for American dreamers. When you choose this truck, you're not just buying a vehicle — you're standing up for everything this great nation represents.'

A commentator criticizing a proposed trade agreement declares: 'Any politician who supports this deal is choosing foreign interests over American workers. True patriots put this country first — always. If you love this nation, the choice is obvious.'

Verification Steps
Verification Steps
Binary yes/no questions that an AI must answer to detect a reasoning pattern in a text.
Each of the 452 aspects has verification steps — simple yes/no questions designed to systematically detect whether a pattern appears in a text. For ad hominem: "Does the argument attack a person rather than their claim?" For false dichotomy: "Are only two options presented when more exist?" This ensures consistent, reproducible analysis.

Binary (yes/no) questions an LLM must answer to identify this aspect:

    Type: binary
  2. 2

Is the patriotic appeal used to justify a specific idea or policy?
